Day 1: Some of the treasures of the Northeast United States await us as we leave Kansas and head east for exciting visits in Providence, Rhode Island; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and into New York’s Hudson Valley. Today we travel through Missouri to Collinsville, IL, for night.
2: Our trip today takes us through the fertile farmland of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Night in Columbus, capital of Ohio.
3: Our drive this morning brings us to Pittsburgh, PA. Our afternoon is dedicated to having a local guide give us a tour of this city which is famous for its three rivers: Allegheny, Monongahela and the Ohio. Night in New Stanton.
4: As we continue east through Pennsylvania we make a stop in Hershey which is known worldwide for its chocolate. We visit Hershey’s Chocolate World which is the visitor center for the Hershey Foods Corporation. In the afternoon we continue our drive to Mahwah, NJ, where we spend the night.
5: Our destination this morning is Newport, Rhode Island. Once the hub of Colonial commerce, Newport is now known as the hot spot for the elite. A local guide comes aboard our motorcoach for a tour through Newport’s Old Town, Ocean Drive and “Millionaires Row”. We stop for a tour at The Breakers known as Newport’s most opulent mansion. Following our time in Newport we continue on to Hyannis, MA, where we spend the next four nights. Dinner included.
6: After breakfast this morning our local guide brings us to HY-Line Docks where we board the ferry to the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Upon arrival we enjoy a sightseeing tour of the island where we learn about the history and lifestyles of the islanders. Before boarding the ferry back to the mainland we visit Oak Bluffs with its brightly painted cottages and decorative “gingerbread” trim. Dinner is included this evening.
7: Breakfast at our hotel gives us a good start to a full day of touring. We travel the Old Kings Highway winding through centuries of Cape Cod history on our way to Provincetown at the extreme tip of Cape Cod. We take time to enjoy the shops and galleries that make this artists/fisherman village so unique. This afternoon we board an excursion vessel for an amazing experience whale watching. Dinner is included in Provincetown before we return to Hyannis.
8: Following breakfast our local guide takes us on a tour of Hyannis which includes the John F. Kennedy Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, Hyannis Port and a view of St. Francis Xavier Church, the summer parish of the Kennedy family. Next we visit Sandwich, the oldest town on Cape Cod. We view the Village Green, the Great Salt Marsh, a cranberry bog and Cape Cod Bay. Then it is on to America’s Hometown, Plymouth. Photo stops are made at Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II, a reproduction of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. This evening we enjoy a lobster dinner.
9: Following breakfast at our hotel we head west toward New York State. This afternoon we have a local guide join us for a tour of the United States Military Academy in West Point. The tour visits Cadet Cape and Trophy Point as well as time to visit the museum and visitor center. Next two nights in Poughkeepsie.
10: The only National Historic Site dedicated to a first lady, Val-Kill welcomes visitors in the style of Eleanor Roosevelt. This morning we tour the Cottage and grounds which was the only place that she felt she could ever call her own. Next we tour and enjoy lunch at the Culinary Institute of America. This afternoon we tour Franklin Roosevelt’s Home and Library including the film in the Wallace Center on the life of the Roosevelt family.
11: This morning we make the drive to Albany, New York's capital city. We tour the Capitol and the Empire Plaza with a local guide. Later we continue west to Herkimer for a cruise on the Erie Canal. The cruise takes us through Lock 18 which raises and lower vessels 20 feet. The fully narrated cruise features the past, present and future of the world's most iconic waterway. Night in Geneva.
12: The Finger Lakes region of northern New York is known for its scenic beauty, its quaint towns and villages and its many museums. Today a local guide shows us around the area and helps us enjoy some of the charm of the region. In late afternoon we travel to Olean for the night.
13: This morning we drive to Titusville, PA, where we board the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad for a three-hour ride through the countryside. Traveling in vintage train cars we learn about the people and places that made up Pennsylvania Oil Country where oil history began. After our train excursion we board our motorcoach and continue to Columbus, OH, for night.
14: Our travel today takes through western Ohio, Indiana and Illinois as we are headed to St. Peters. MO, for the night.
15: We have time today to reflect on the many new and wonderful experiences as we return home to Kansas.
