Day 1: Our destination includes one of the most photographed annual events in the United States. The startling colors of the balloons silhouetted against the blue desert sky are a treat for the eye. We cross central and southwestern Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle to stay the night in Clayton, NM.
This morning we drive through the scenic grandeur of northeast New Mexico on our way to Santa Fe. After an included lunch a guide joins us for a walking tour of historic Santa Fe visiting such points of interest as the Plaza, St. Francis Cathedral and Loretto Chapel. There will be time following the tour to explore on your own. Our departure from Santa Fe will be early enough for us to arrive at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta grounds for the evening’s Special Shapes Glowdeo. Next two nights in Albuquerque.
We begin our day with a ride on the Sandia Peak Tram, the world’s longest free-span cable tramway. The ride to the top takes you through four of the seven life-zones in North America. Next we visit the Turquoise Museum, perhaps the largest private collection in the world. A novel collection, this museum focuses on the beauty, mythology, and physical properties of turquoise. Following a brief walking tour in Old Town Albuquerque there is time for exploring and lunch on your own. This afternoon we visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center for a look at the lifeways and culture of the Pueblo Indian tribes. Dinner this evening is included at El Pinto restaurant regarded by locals and visitors alike as the place for the finest in traditional New Mexican cooking.
We rise early this morning to head to the Balloon Fiesta grounds for the mass ascension. Balloons-Balloons are everywhere today as hundreds of balloons rise in the early morning from Fiesta Park. The multi-colored globes and unusual shapes are truly spectacular. This morning after the balloons have disappeared we head east to our last night in Dalhart, TX.
Today we remember the sights and flavors of the southwest as we return home.
